Fear is a weird emotion.
Sometimes you are afraid of things that you should be and other times it just kind of creeps up on you like a lizard and scares the kitten out of you. Either way, fear is an emotion that motivates you to do or not do stuff all the time.
King David knew fear. Saul was jealous of David and repeatedly tried to hunt down his adversary and have him killed. This went on for years and he had several close calls. That’s helps us understand the power in this song he wrote about fear. It says,
The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom shall I be afraid?
When the wicked advance against me
to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
who will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
even then I will be confident.
We all have things that scare us. But David reminds us that when God has our back, fear gets redefined.
- Have you ever been startled the way the kitten was startled by the lizard?
- Would you rather be scared of something you know is going to happen or be surprised?
- When was a time you overcame a big fear?
Chew on this:
If David said we shouldn’t fear stuff why did he run from Saul for years?
