Autumn Update from Alway

The start of this year has been really exciting in Alway not only because of Pip and Troy joining us as new team members, but also because of the new things we have been doing as well as developing the already existing projects.

Here are some of the things we have been doing:

Gsus Live

Gsus Live is an interactive classroom on a trailer where teenagers come aboard and look at three different issues from a Christian perspective. They are fear, rejection and forgiveness. It was great having the young people ask questions and engage with the issues that they where faced with.

Llanwern High School Chaplaincy

This is one of the staple things we do week to week, where we go into the school at lunch times to chat to the pupils, play games and get to know them. But mainly we aim to be there for people who maybe having a hard time in school and on the margins. It has been especially encouraging having some Year 7 pupils approach us at lunch times after recognising us from our assemblies when they were in primary school. We are a familiar face and some one who will listen and support them as they struggle to find their feet at secondary school.

Bishpool Youth Club

This year Youth Club has seen a shift to a new day and a new time after discussion with our young people last summer. We now meet midweek on Wednesdays at 5-7pm and since then we have seen growth in numbers which is great! A usual night includes card games, xbox, pool, table tennis, hot chocolate and a tournament or two, with special activities like baking or arts and crafts from time to time.

Detached Youth Work

With the fine weather so far this year we have been lucky to be able to go out on detached regularly. We’ve been experimenting with times and days as we try to find the best time to meet as many local young people as we can.

Foodbank

Two weeks ago, Bishpool Foodbank opened its doors for the first time and the Alway team will be there each week to offer support to the most needy and vulnerable in our community.

Coming soon…

The team will be undertaking training in mentoring to be able to offer one to one support and advice to young people in difficult situations.

Please pray for Alway:

  • Give thanks for relationships and continuity with pupils from Alway Primary through to the secondary school and the opportunities that this offers.
  • Pray for greater links with the local community and local agencies.
  • Pray for continued growth in number at the youth club
  • Pray for stronger relationships with the young people in the schools.
  • Pray that we will be able to help set up a breakfast club at Alway primary within the year.
